Everything you need to know about the custom earplug process

If you're a keen swimmer or musician, exposure to high noise levels is part of your job, so you MUST protect your hearing. Custom earplugs are a fantastic way to take care of your ears, and as they're specially made for you, you know they'll provide the perfect fit. At earLAB, we're experts at creating custom earplugs in our Melbourne clinics. Here's what you need to know about the custom earplug process.

How do I get fitted for custom earplugs?

To begin the process, we take an impression of your ear. One of our friendly teams will slowly inject a soft, medical-grade silicone into your outer ear. After the silicone has a few minutes to cure, we will remove it to reveal the impression used to create your earplugs. You will experience a cool sensation in your ear as the material sets. The entire process should take no more than 10 minutes.

After we've completed your impressions, they're sent to a manufacturer who will prepare your earplugs according to the shape of your ear. They should be ready within two weeks. Once your earplugs are ready, we'll book an appointment, and you can try them to ensure a perfect, comfortable fit. Our team is on hand to perform any refitting or maintenance as required. Your custom-made earplugs also come complete with a handy case and tool for cleaning.

Do I need custom earplugs?

Custom earplugs offer excellent hearing protection. As they're designed specifically for you, they're more involved than if you just grabbed some ready-made earplugs off the shelf. Foam earplugs are fine if your partner is snoring, but if you're a musician or sound engineer or enjoy swimming, shooting or motorsports, custom earplugs are necessary.

What are the benefits of custom earplugs?

Custom earplugs are a popular choice because they are:

  • Customisable: You can choose the level of noise reduction you need - and while you're at it, pick a colour, too.
  • Specially designed: Whether you're a musician or avid swimmer, we can change the design of your earplugs to suit what you do.
  • Comfortable: You'll enjoy a perfect fit for your ears with outstanding noise reduction.
  • Long-lasting: Custom earplugs can last up to five years with regular use.
  • Compatible with technology: You can pair them with your phone, iPod, MP3 player, or other communication devices.
