In short, no. Cotton buds are most likely to simply push the wax further in. Over time, this can create severe build-up of cerumen, damage the soft tissues in your ear canal and even puncture the eardrum. So as the saying goes, never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear!
Most health insurance plans only cover audiology consultations and hearing aids, not other services like microsuction. This is due to their fund rules. However, St. Lukes Health provides rebates for our services. For more details, please contact your health fund's customer service.

Earwax is a natural lubricant and antibacterial agent produced by glands in the ear canal. It helps clean, lubricate, and protect the ear, trapping dirt and preventing excess water from entering. This is essential for maintaining ear health.
Most GPs will treat a blocked ear with an ear syringe, which is a pressurised device that flushes out the ear with water. This isn’t always effective, and can lead to infection or damage to the eardrum. Microsuction, by contrast, is gentle, dry, precise and safe – the gold standard for ear wax removal.
Yes. Medical specialists around the world regard aural microsuction as the safest, most effective choice for cleaning ears (also known as ‘dewaxing’). Usually the procedure is very quick, easy and gives you instant relief. At our ear wax removal clinic in Melbourne we have performed this proceedure countless times with great results. Microsuction can be used even if the eardrum has been previously perforated. It is useful in removing excessive discharge caused by ear infection and it can also remove foreign bodies.
The length of your treatment will depend on the degree of blockage, so please allow for up to 20 minutes in your schedule. Usually you can expect amazing results within half that time.
Everyone produces ear wax at a different rate. If you’re prone to build-up, you’ll need microsuction more frequently. In general, it’s good to have a regular check-up every 6 to 12 months for good ear wax management and to prevent any issues. We can place you on our recall list as a reminder to have your ears cleaned every 6, 9 or 12 months.
We DO NOT see children under the age of 10. We recommend that children should be at least 10 years old and up and are able to sit still on the chair for 15 minutes or so with the assistance of a parent. Young children often find microsuction more comfortable than ear irrigation or syringing. The procedure can be noisy when using the suction machine, but we can remove ear wax using other instruments to make the procedure more acceptable if required.
We advice not to use any over-the-counter eardrops e.g. Waxol, Cerumol, Audiclean Ear Wax Remover, Ear Clear ear drops, Clean Ears spray, Aquaear ear drops, Audisol earwax remover etc...Usually microsuction does not need pre-treatment, if you feel your ears are severely blocked you may use some olive oil for up to two days before the appointment to soften any wax build-up this can make the procedure faster and more comfortable.

Ear candles are more dangerous than they look. They can cause burns to your face, hair, scalp, ear canal and eardrum. You’ll also introduce traces of candle wax into the ear canal, and can risk perforating your eardrum. Ultimately, research has shown that ear candles don’t work – so avoid them.

It's crucial to consider that issues like hearing loss could be due to problems in the middle or inner ear rather than just earwax buildup. In such instances, earwax removal might not be the most suitable solution. The Audiologist will engage in a discussion with the patient to explore potential next steps. This may involve referrals for hearing tests, middle ear pressure tests, scans, or balance testing. The specific tests needed will be determined based on the individual patient's history and examination results.
After a microsuction procedure, keep your ears clean and dry to prevent infection. Avoid swimming or submerging your ears in water for at least 48 hours.
Earwax is a natural lubricant and antibacterial agent produced by glands in the ear canal. It helps clean, lubricate, and protect the ear, trapping dirt and preventing excess water from entering. This is essential for maintaining ear health.
Noise-induced hearing loss occurs when sensitive structures in the inner ear are damaged by brief or extended periods of exposure to loud sounds. NIHL usually happens with noise levels greater than 85decibels (dBs). Damage happens faster as noise levels increase above this threshold.

While taking a free online hearing test might seem tempting, if you’re looking for an accurate description of your current hearing health then we wouldn’t recommend it. If you aren’t in a controlled space, then background noise and distractions may negatively impact your results. Additionally, these free tests rely on your sound system, and if your computer or headphones don’t work perfectly then it may affect your results.Free online hearing tests also lack context and in-depth analysis. As an example, most will not include:- Physical problems such as earwax build up- Measuring how sounds move through your ear canal- Measuring how your eardrum moves- Comfortable listening levels - Speech/word recognitionLastly, free online hearing tests often try to push you into hearing aids, without knowing for certain that you require them.If you'd rather an accurate analysis of your hearing health, book our diagnostic clinical hearing tests in Melbourne today and receive unparalleled hearing care from our highly trained audiologists.

Most hearing aids have a lifespan of 5 to 7 years, depending on the model and how well they are maintained. Regular professional cleaning and proactive care are the best ways to ensure your devices remain in peak condition for as long as possible.
Medicare does not provide rebates for the purchase of hearing aids. However, you may be eligible for coverage through the NDIS or the government’s Hearing Services Program (HSP). We can assist you in exploring these funding options.
Many private health insurance policies with "extras" cover provide rebates for hearing devices. Because benefits vary widely between providers, we recommend contacting your insurer directly to confirm your specific entitlement and claim amount.
Technology levels classify devices by their performance, particularly how well they manage background noise. While premium levels offer the most advanced speech isolation in crowds, a more entry-level device may be perfectly suitable if you primarily spend time in quieter environments.
The best style depends on your degree of hearing loss, ear shape, and manual dexterity, as well as your preferences for visibility. Your audiologist will help you choose a device that balances the necessary technology with your budget and daily communication needs.
Hearing aids pick up sound through a microphone and convert it into electrical signals. These signals are then processed and customised by an internal chip to match your specific level of hearing loss. Finally, a small speaker sends the amplified, tailored sound into your ear for clearer hearing.
A hearing aid is a precision device worn in or behind the ear designed to improve sound clarity for those with hearing loss. Rather than just a standalone product, it is a key tool in a professional hearing rehabilitation program, requiring personalised adjustments and expert care to be truly effective.
The cost reflects the sophisticated research and miniaturised technology required to help you process speech in noisy environments. At earLAB, this investment also includes essential, ongoing audiological support. We provide the fine-tuning and adaptation coaching necessary to ensure your devices work optimally for your specific lifestyle and communication goals.
Anyone who needs a quieter sleep environment. Think shift-workers, people with a partner who snores, and those dealing with barking dogs or traffic noise.
The SleepSound attenuated about 25-27dB. It is a solid earplug and it attenuates about as much as a very good fitting foam plug.
Unlike off-the-shelf foam options, these earplugs are made for comfort – they’re soft, lightweight and fit your ear canal perfectly. That means you can comfortably lie on your side, without irritation. They also won’t fall out of your ear while you sleep – a major complaint for those who use foam earplugs.
While your custom product has the potential to last indefinitely, we recommend obtaining new ear impressions every 4 years. This is advised because the shape of your ear canals can undergo changes over time.
Silicone earplugs generally do not make the ears sweaty because silicone is a breathable material. However, individual experiences may vary.
Yes, if you participate in water sports and are prone to ear issues. They can make all the difference between an enjoyable hobby and one that leads to pain, hearing problems and worse.
It depends on your needs and budget. Many casual swimmers who don’t have ear issues can make do with off-the-shelf options. However, if you’re prone to ear infections like swimmer’s ear, have grommets (also known as ear tubes) or a ruptured eardrum, you’ll need custom moulded plugs that create a perfect watertight seal and keep your ear canal dry.
Yes – custom plugs can be made to fit any size ear. It’s especially important for children who’ve had grommets fitted to use swim plugs.
Absolutely. Swimmer’s ear happens when water is trapped in your ear canal, so the best solution is to avoid water entering your ear in the first place.
They can. Surfer’s ear, also known as extoses, are bony growths in the outer ear triggered by repeated exposure to cold water. By protecting your ear canal, earplugs can prevent them from forming, or getting worse.
While your custom product has the potential to last indefinitely, we recommend obtaining new ear impressions every 4 years. This is advised because the shape of your ear canals can undergo changes over time.

No, some individuals perceive that earplugs impact balance, but it's merely a shift in spatial awareness. Using any type of earplug does not have any physical effects on your balance. Many surfers and open water swimmers use them without issue.
The objective is to achieve a snug, waterproof fit, our Swim Plugs and Pro-Aquaz will generally accomplish this. However, we cannot provide a guarantee due to the anatomical variability in people's ears. Nonetheless, in all scenarios, the flushing effect of water and wind chill will be minimised, and it is this reduction that will aid in preventing Surfers Ear, Swimmer’s ear and ear infections
Aboslutely, if you've encountered surfers ear, dealt with infections, or faced downtime from the water due to surgery or waiting for antibiotics during any water sports, then the answer is a definite YES. Surfboard ≈$700 Wetsuit ≈$400, The Fins ≈$100, and protection against infections & surfers ear? That's PRICELESS!
Yes, we keep your impressions on file for 4 years and within this time you can have as many spare sets made.
Yes, our custom swim and surf plugs are tailor-made and suitable for use in these conditions. However, it is essential to follow the guidance of your specialist, who can determine whether our custom plugs are appropriate for your specific medical condition.
We expect the typical lifetime to be 3 to 4 years although some natural anatomical changes to the ears may require an update sooner.
Please email our reception@earlab.com.au. We can guarantee proper fitting and assess whether any slight adjustments are necessary to ensure they fit accurately. Providing a close-up photo of the plugs in the ear may aid us in diagnosing any fitting issues.
The cables ACS uses for IEMs have the 0.78mm variety of 2-pin. Therefore, the cables are interchangeable with other IEM cables that use this spec. However, there is another version of 2-pin connector on the market which has a 0.75mm pin, the ACS cables would not work with these ones. However, prior to ordering the cable for IEMs from ACS, we need to clarify about the position of the socket on the other IEMs. On the ACS IEMs, the socket is slightly recessed into the mould and shaped like the rectangular shape on the end of the cable connector. So if the other IEM’s cable had a cylinder shaped barrel on the 2-pin connector it wouldn’t properly fit into the recession. If the socket on the IEMs is not recessed, then it shouldn’t be a problem. If this explanation is unclear, it might be a good idea to ask client to refer to the banner image of the IEMs on our website or even to get him to take a picture of his IEMs and email them to us.
That's because the Evoke's use only a single driver for the range of frequencies. All the other ACS IEMs have at least a bass driver, and a separate treble/ tweeter driver. So therefore the range of the Evokes is not as wide, so they need to compact all the parts in a tiny driver.
An ear impression fitting typically takes 15–20 minutes in clinic. This includes checking your ears for wax or blockages, safely taking the impression, and ensuring a comfortable, accurate mould for your custom earplugs. It’s a quick and painless process.
With proper care, custom earplugs typically last several years. Their lifespan depends on usage, storage, and natural changes to your ear shape over time. Many users choose to update their earplugs periodically to ensure continued comfort, hygiene, and optimal protection.
Custom earplugs provide significantly better noise reduction, comfort, and long term wear compared to disposable or off the shelf earplugs. Because they are made specifically for your ears, they maintain a secure seal and can reduce harmful noise levels across a wider range of frequencies.
